Group Block of all Elements 118

A group of elements in the periodic table are grouped together into blocks according to the atomic orbitals that their valence electrons or vacancies occupy.  Charles Janet seems to have coined the phrase originally. The s-block, p-block, d-block, and f-block names are given to each block in honor of its distinctive orbital.

The block designations (sharp (0), primary (1), diffuse (2), or fundamental) are derived from the spectroscopic notation for the value of an electron's azimuthal quantum number (3). The following notations are listed alphabetically as g, h, etc., even though the items that should be in these blocks have not yet been discovered.

The only block with all three categories of elements—metals, nonmetals, and metalloids—is this one. The groups that make up the p-block elements are as follows: group 13, the icosagens; group 14, the crystallogens; group 15, the pnictogens; group 16, the chalcogens; group 17, the halogens; and group 18, the helium group, made up of the noble gases (aside from helium) and oganesson. As an alternative, the p-block can be defined as comprising noble gases, reactive nonmetals like halogens, metalloids, post-transition metals, and reactive nonmetals (excluding helium).
